COVID-19 Safety Measures for Summer Day Camp
The health and safety of our children and staff continues to be our number one priority at the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama. We continue to work with local/county/state officials and the CDC to put the following measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Hygiene Procedures
We will teach proper hand-washing techniques to both staff and campers.
Hand-washing will be conducted by both staff and campers:
- Upon arrival
- Before meals and snacks
- After blowing the nose, coughing, or sneezing
- After using the restroom
We will teach coughing/sneezing into the elbow with both staff and campers.
Face Masks
All campers and staff are required to wear face masks during RMDC. Campers will have scheduled breaks throughout the day outdoors when six feet of social distancing can be maintained. Campers will not be able to enter the program without their face mask.
Camper Illness
In order to protect campers and staff, campers exhibiting any of the following symptoms will be removed from summer day camp until symptom-free for 24 hours:
- Illness – unable to participate in routine activities, or in need of more care than RMDC staff can provide
- Fever with behavior changes, difficulty breathing, uncontrolled coughing, unusual tiredness, persistent crying
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Open sores, rash, or signs of infection
- Runny nose with mucus
Campers and staff who do not feel well or have symptoms of COVID-19 will not be allowed to attend RMDC.
Should a camper get sick while at RMDC, they will be isolated from the remainder of the campers, and their parents or guardian will be called to pick up the child.
Parents should notify us as soon as possible if a member of the household or camper has tested positive for COVID-19 or loss of taste or smell.
Cleaning Procedures
- Facilities will be cleaned and disinfected prior to opening and after closing each day, as well as throughout the day.
- All locations will implement frequent disinfection of high-traffic, high-touch areas, such as door handles and hand rails.
- Water fountains will only be used to refill water bottles.
- Equipment will be cleaned after each activity.
- Tables and chairs will be wiped down after each group uses them if sharing space, and at the end of the day.
COVID-19 Exposure
In the event of COVID-19 exposure in our camp, the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama will work closely with the Jefferson County Health Department and Alabama Department of Public Health, CDC and Girl Scout and follow their recommendations on next steps. We will follow ADPH, CDC, and Girl Scout policies and guidelines.
Refund Medical Policy
In cases of medical related instances a refund of $25 will be refunded up to the day before camp starts. If a medical issue occurs during the week of camp and you are unable to attend camp there will be no refund issued.
Daily Camper & Staff Screening
Each camper and staff member will complete a screening daily upon arrival at camp. The screening will include a temperature check and wellness screening which includes a symptom check. Parents and staff will be asked the following questions:
- Have you or anyone in your household traveled to another country in the last 14 days?
- Have you been in contact with someone under examination with a confirmed case of COVID-19?
- Have you or a member of your household been instructed to self-quarantine?
- Are you experiencing symptoms of illness? If so, what symptoms?
Parents or staff who answer yes to these questions or have a temperature of 100.4 will not be able to remain at the Hoover Met Complex for Summer Day Camp.
Groups and Social Distancing
The goal of groups is to reduce the exposure to COVID-19 should there be a positive case at camp. Group sizes will be no larger than 14 campers, 4 PAs and 2 adults. Groups will be made up of campers of the same age as much as feasible. Groups will not interact with other groups as much as possible.
We will take the following steps to enforce social distancing:
- Space seating at least six feet apart.
- When at tables with chairs, campers should sit at the heads of tables.
- At picnic tables, campers will sit diagonally on the end. Spaces will be marked where to sit.
- There will be visual cues on the floors to help campers understand what six feet of distance looks like.
Shared Equipment
The CDC guidelines suggest the following as it relates to shared supplies:
- Discourage the sharing of items that are difficult to clean, sanitize, or disinfect.
- Keep each camper’s belongings separated from others and in individually labeled containers/cubbies/areas.
- Ensure adequate supplies to minimize the sharing of high-touch materials to the extent possible or limit the use of supplies and equipment to one group of campers at a time and clean/disinfect between uses.
- Avoid sharing electronic devices, toys, books, and other games.
If equipment is being shared by campers, the following steps will be taken:
- Prior to the activity, all campers will wash their hands and the equipment will be cleaned and disinfected.
- After the activity, the equipment will be cleaned and disinfected, and campers will wash their hands again.
- Campers will be reminded often not to touch their face with their hands.
Drop Off/Check-in Procedures
- Drop off will take place carpool style or in a designated space outside.
- Drop off will be contactless.
- Daily health screening of campers and staff will be conducted upon arrival. This includes a temperature check and wellness screening.
Campers or staff who have a fever of 100.0 or higher will not be permitted to stay at camp and must be fever-free without medication for 72 hours before they can return.
What We Are Asking Parents to Do
Parents, you are important in keeping our campers and staff healthy, and we ask you to please do the following:
- Keep your camper home if she or any member of the immediate household are sick with fever or any other contagious illness.
- Keep the program informed when your camper is absent and notify the Health Care Manager if your camper has been diagnosed with any contagious illness(es).
- Keep your camper home if they have been in contact with anyone being tested for COVID-19 until test results come back negative.
- Keep RMDC staff informed if an immediate family member has been tested/diagnosed with COVID-19.
- Teach proper hand-washing techniques to your child.
- Teach proper coughing/sneezing into the elbow to your child.
- Ensure your child is getting enough sleep and eating well.
Please know we want all campers & staff at Rocky Mountain Day Camp to have the most positive experience possible at camp and therefore we will strictly enforce all the procedures and guidelines listed above in order to protect the safety of all participants.
